Trip Date July 97
Trip: Canoe Lake to Burnt Island Lake

We started from home at 2:00 P.M. and headed for Algonquin arriving at about 6:30 P.M. Upon arrival we headed out up Canoe lake with a high head wind. After crossing the Very busy 295 m. portage we carried on up into Little Joe Lake, on the East Arm. By this time it was getting late and we decided to make camp at a nice little sight on the south shore. We got the tent set up and proceeded to make dinner. (steak, potatoes and veggie) and of course coffee. by the time dinner was cooked it was almost dark and we only had flashlights to see. While Al was eating dinner he managed to drop the plate and his dinner all over the ground. After picking up what he could finished dinner and decided to get to bed.

The next morning, Saturday, we woke up about 5:30 A.M. and it was overcast and looked like rain. We got Breakfast , (Bacon, eggs &Coffee) and proceeded to break camp and move on. after a paddle up through lost Joe Lake and two portages 165 m. and 435 m. we got into Joe lake. In Joe lake we saw a couple of beaver and lots of birds. Finally we came to the 200 m. portage to Burnt Island Lake. This portage also divides the other way 1140 m. to Little Doe Lake. It was now getting near lunch time so we stopped at the portage to eat (Granola bars, and a drink). At Burnt Island Lake we put in and proceeded to try and find a campsite on the island, however, both sights were taken. After paddling around the Island we found a nice site on the north shore and decided to make camp there. After getting set up, we went for a paddle and a swim and just took it easy. After Dinner we went for a paddle and after coming back, watched the sunset and sat around the fire just watching some Loons and enjoying the quiet. After dark we watched a great star show and crashed about 11:30 P.M.

Sunday, after break fast we decided to head back down into Joe Lake in order to make an early getaway on Monday. After breaking camp we paddled to the portage to Little Joe L. and made the trek The portage was busy due to all the people heading home, but having an extra day we weren't to worried. We paddled down Little Joe to the 435 m. portage and decided to see if we could run the creek. The water level wasn't too bad so we went for it. It was a little tricky and at one point we had to get out and walk the canoe but it was fun. when we got to the 165 m. portage we just kept going and came out into Joe Lake. We then paddled down the lake and found the same campsite we had onFridaya so we stopped there. After setting up camp we paddled into a large bay were we saw an abundance of wildlife mostly aquatic, but it was interesting how close to a turtle you can get without disturbing it.

It started to look like rain so we headed back to camp. Right about dinner time Down it came It rained in buckets for about 10 minutes, then let up. It rained off and on the rest of the evening and most of the night. About 5:30 A.M. we were awakened by a huge clap of thunder. (we never heard any more) We had a very quick breakfast and broke camp it wasn't raining so we figured we better set out, watching the sky in case we had to hole up. We made it to the 290 m. portage in about 25 minutes, there was no wind and noon at the portage. We put in and started down Canoe Lake. About half way down the lake the wind cam up out of the South West and the lake quickly became very choppy. It took us almost 2 hours to get to the Portage Store, where we finished. We bought our lunch at the Portage Store (they serve a mean Hamburger plate) and left for home some of the pictures that Al took are B/W he was trying to finish off a roll of film from another project.

Comment:

This is a nice little weekend trip for a novice there is no white water and the portages are short.
