All the species are endangered because of wide scale habitat destruction. Recently, pitcher collection for the floral arrangement industry is posing new problems. Field collection of rare forms by collectors has wiped out some stands of plants. The plants which are most critically endangered are S. Raphia, S. Rubra subsp. Jonesii, S. Rubera subsp. Alabamensis, and S. purpurea subsp.(see photo) purpurea f. heterophylla. These plants are so rare that people are raiding nature preserves to poach plants and seed heads. The floral trade will probably push S. leucophylla closer to extinction because of that species' beautiful pitchers. The suggested planting medium is Sphagnum kept wet year round. These plants require a winter dormancy period of decreased moisture, light, and temperatures. The species S. oreophila, S. rubra subsp. jonesii, and S. purpurea subsp. purpurea expect cold weather, even frosts, during the winter.
