Al & Karen's Trip Tips

Hanging Food Bags

A good method of hanging food bags is to get a couple of pulleys (2) a snap hook, such as the kind for tying up a dog (large) and 50 ft of 3/8" rope. Make up a rope hoist.(See diagram) On one pulley put 20 ft of rope with a smaller cord attached for throwing over a branch and tying off. Attach the snap hook to the other pulley and clip it onto your food bag. Throw the small cord over a branch in a tree and pull the pulley up to the height you wish and tie it off. With the loose end of the rope, one end of which is attached to the pulley which you just pulled up, and run through the pulleys. Pull the loose end of this rope raising the food bag up to where you want it and tie it off, lowering it when necessary.

Camp Light
A good source of light at camp is a candle lantern. These can be found at most outdoor stores and are very light (2 oz.). We have found that they give off quite a bit of light and are very portable. I do not recommend them for use inside your tent unless you can hang them, because the top gets quite hot. The other great thing we found was that all you need for fuel is a spare candle and they are light and cheap. One candle will burn for about 9 hrs.
